Potentials and requirements for the internal use of drones for material transport

Internal material transports are changing rapidly: Shrinking production lot sizes lead to lower supply and/or delivery lot sizes and hence the transport frequencies are increasing. Unplanned material transports for missing materials or spare parts for maintenance are very time-consuming and costly due to the small quantities and often long distances.

A possible solution are unmanned aerial vehicles as a novel transport technology. You can operate in the third dimension in previously unused airspace. However, the concrete use of drones in production operations still face risks and obstacles (eg raising dust, profitability, legal position). It is also unclear which legal / insurance-technical, and operational requirements must be created by drone manufacturers for the use in production operations. Finally, the research project clarifies the question of which economic and logistic potentials are created by the use of drones for in-house material transport.
